The village
The village has a fantastic bakery (open 7/7 in the summer), a guinguette that serves drinks, ice cream and very good home-made food from salads to burger and chips, plus Abélino – daily serving freshly-made takeaway pizzas but also offering weekend specialities in the restaurant. The village also has a small shop for everyday essentials.
The nearest supermarket is less than 10 minutes’ drive away and there are many more local guinguettes, brasseries and bistros throughout the locality. We can provide information in advance if required, and your gîte will have up-to-date cards and fliers of local businesses of interest.
The area
“Le Gard” is in the mid-south of France and stretches from the Mediterranean to the Ardèche in the north. This region is known for 300 sunny days a year – and also has been awarded the “Starry Sky (Ciel Etoilé)” label for its clear night skies unspoiled by light pollution. The area has so many different things to do and places to visit that it’s impossible to list them and not miss a great idea – around our village there is something for everyone! You are very well placed for sports activities; “via ferrata”, mountain climbing, water sports – including kayaking the Ardeche, cycling perhaps with electric assistance. Villefort, a short distance away also has many things to offer. The geography of the region lends itself to magnificent gorges which are to be explored by foot or by boat in Chassezac, the Ardèche and the Gorges de la Cèze.
Gastronomic excursions; tastings in the “caves”; “Domaine de Berguerolles“, “Domaine Chazalis” and organic wines of “Château des Lèbres” are good opportunities to taste and buy some of local wines. Local markets are an ideal place to find good quality fresh produce, and local goods and quality restaurants can be found throughout the area. We can help with reservations if needed.
Heritage visits; “La Cocalière” and “Grotte Chauvet 2” are two of the most beautiful caves in France and there are several “most beautiful villages (plus beaux villages)” to visit.
To enjoy some of our history you can visit the Pont du Gard or take a ride on the stream train at Anduze. Of course, we boast about our Roman city of Nimes which is an hour away by car – with one of the best preserved amphitheatres.
Further afield – but highly recommended – is a visit to the atypical art gallery Carrières de Lumières in the old stone quarries in Les Baux.
For the young and the young at heart, there are a good number of activities to do and places to visit … The tree climbing and activity parks Indy Parc and Le Grand Bois are great visits for the active person. Less demanding is the Serviers et Labaume water park– an outing for the whole family. Even more relaxing are the visits to the Crocodile farm, “La Bambouseraie“, not to mention the “Haribo“museum!
Local music festivals (e.g. Les In’Attendus de Gagnières, Watt the Funk) also take place during the year, and there are an increasing number of jazz and blues concerts in local cafes.
…Or you could simply take a break and enjoy the sun in one of our double hammocks next to the pool!
